It's a bit of a weird time right now. Days spent indoors, quick trips to Aldi bring on a guilt trip like no other, and somehow the news just keeps on getting worse. There isn't anything to be done- if we want to step up and do our bit, we need to stay home where possible. A bit of escapism is exactly what the doctor ordered! While I'm the kind of person who likes to potter about my room with a YouTuber talking in the background, there have been a few series that have completely take over my life. Here are my favourite Netflix shows that are 100% binge-able!
The Stranger
I love a good British drama, and The Stranger has been my most recent binge. Based on a book by award-winning author Harlan Coben, The Stranger is a miniseries exclusive to Netflix. When protagonist Adam Price (played by Richard Armitage) is approached by a stranger who gives him evidence of his wife's lie, it causes a ripple effect that spreads throughout the local community. As the stranger exposes more secrets, things turn deadly. A brilliantly cultivated series, with mysterious subplots woven in expertly, you'll be hooked on The Stranger!
Safe
Another Harlan Coben novel adapted to the screen, Safe was released in 2018. As with The Stranger, the series was filmed in Manchester, Liverpool and Cheshire. The locations used for these two series are just incredible, it makes me miss the UK that much more. In Safe, pediatric surgeon Dr Tom Delaney (played by Dexter's Michael C. Hall) is still reeling from his wife's death the year prior. Navigating this new normal while trying to raise his two teenage daughters, his youngest- 16 year old Jenny (played by Amy James-Kelly)- goes missing. On a mission to find her, Tom starts unraveling the secrets of his daughters' lives. Another miniseries, you'll fly through all eight episodes of Safe and be salivating for more.
Dr Foster
Trigger warning: if you're sensitive to the thoughts of cheating you might want to skip this one. I know I was skeptical at first, but the revenge plot of Dr Foster is well worth it. Dr Gemma Foster (Suranne Jones) has it all; a wonderful 14 year marriage, a teenage son, a gorgeous house and a successful career as a senior GP partner in the local surgery. Until she finds a strand of long, blonde hair that can't belong to the family. As her world falls around her and cracks begin to spoil the very foundations of her being, Gemma struggles to forgive her husband and starts to plan the best way to separate. Once you're obsessed, you'll be glad to know that there are two seasons on Netflix to enjoy!
Bodyguard
A fast-paced British drama, Bodyguard will have you sitting at the edge of your seat. Police Sergeant David Budd (Richard Madden) intercepts and prevents a terrorist attack on the train that he's travelling in. His heroism and skills noted, Sgt Budd is assigned as Personal Protection Officer to Home Secretary Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes). Suffering from PTSD from his time in the British Army, Sgt Budd is critical of MP Montague's defense policies. With the controversial "Snoopers' Charter" RIPA18 bill, which infringes civil liberties of the British people, MP Montague has made many enemies, and with the terror threat to the UK heightened after the last attack, Sgt Budd has to quickly evaluate where his loyalties lie. In Bodyguard, you're thrown so quickly into the action- even my parents were hooked!
Dynasty
The reboot of the 1980s American soap of the same name, Dynasty oozes sexy and the dream rich lifestyle. When Fallon Carrington, gorgeous heiress to a huge Atlanta energy fortune, discovers that her father got engaged to a rival colleague in his organisation, the business-savvy lady decides to start her own organisation. With a huge amount of ego, power and money in the family, it's a recipe for drama. Fallon is a fantastic character; witty, independent and powerful, she's the kind of woman that I'd like to see more of on TV. There are two seasons on Netflix, and I'm hoping that the third will be released soon!
Selling Sunset
The only reality TV show on the list, Selling Sunset genuinely changed my life. I watched it for the first time last April and the spotlight into the glamorous world of the successful was a revelation. Selling Sunset follows the Oppenheim Group, a luxury real estate brokerage in LA. The docu-series follows the glamorous realtors that work for the company, helmed by twin brothers Jason and Brett Openheim. Chrishell Hartley, known for her role on Days of Our Lives, joins the firm and find herself face to face with a tight-nit group of powerful women who work hard and play harder. It's an interesting mix between The Hills and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills with a healthy dose of multi-million dollar homes, what's not to love? The highlight and stand-out star of the show is without a doubt the sharp-tongued Christine Quinn, who puts the 'reality' into 'reality TV'. The escapism is real with Selling Sunset, while making the glamorous life seem within your grasp. I follow all of the girls on Instagram and I cant wait to see what they get up to!
What are your top binge-able Netflix shows? With the likelihood of a lockdown, I need to add to the list! Thanks so much for reading, I really hope that I helped you escape, even just for a little while.
