April anti haul

I love makeup. Like, a lot. I love watching makeup hauls on YouTube, I love reading reviews from my favourite bloggers, I love following beauty news accounts on Instagram to keep up with the latest, and I especially love trying out new products.

Is there anything quite as exciting as choosing an eyeshadow palette and highlight to put on in the morning?!

Unfortunately, part of being a responsible adult means reducing (if not eliminating) my monthly beauty budget with the uncertainty surrounding Covid 19. I’ve been temporarily laid off from my new job and god knows how long it’ll be before I go back, so it’s time to really tighten the purse strings- and I know that I’m not the only one who needs to do it! I’m still keeping up with beauty and skincare products, so I thought it would be fun to take a look at what’s being released that- for one reason or another- I will not be buying. My bank account is thanking me already!

Kara Beauty High Times collection

Why is cannabis so advertiser-friendly lately? I know that it has been legalised in the US for a little while, but I don’t think it’s any classier than tobacco or wine? I just hate the trend, and I’m really not here for it- and that’s just the first reason why I don’t like these eyeshadow palettes. If  they’re made of hemp that’s another story- I’m really interested in hemp products, and my absolute favourite moisturiser is The Body Shop’s Hemp body butter (review here!). But cannabis? These eyeshadow palettes come in orange, purple, and blue and green. I get that bold, bright colours are very trendy lately in the fashion world. And maybe these would be good to have as a ‘just in case’ on the odd chance that you absolutely need a specific colour that you can’t find in your day to day palettes. But the colour stories of these palettes are all over the place and I really can’t imagine the general public using them much. I certainly wouldn’t- and my favourite palette is purple! If you’re looking for a one-colour themed palette that you can actually use to make a whole eyeshadow look, just check out ColourPop’s nine pan collections, they’re far better!

Stila Road Less Travelled palette

I’ve seen this palette around a few times in the last week or so, but I just don’t get it. The packaging is gorgeous, I’ll give it that. It’s very elegant and pretty and definitely gives out a luxury vibe that I can appreciate. But that’s the only thing I can say about it. I see the earthy tones, the matte brown and mauve shade- I just don’t know what to do with the rest of the shadows. And at $39 on the Stila website, it’ll cost so much more in euro when it eventually gets to Boots or LookFantastic. It’s just so sickening. I really want to try Stila, up to the point where I’ve gone into Boots or logged into Boots.ie to treat myself, but I don’t fancy throwing away so much money for a simple eyeshadow or a gloss or something silly. It just doesn’t sit right with me. At the end of the day, I think the colour story of the Road Less Travelled palette isn’t cohesive and it’s ultimately very boring. I'll pass!

Saweetie x Morphe All Access 24A palette

You know, I consider Morphe to be one of the most boring makeup brands going. They just seem to pump out palette after palette of warm browns with a pop of blue or another vibrant shade to help distinguish between them all. The packaging is uninspiring and the colour stories don’t excite me at all. Aside from James Charles and Jeffree Star’s rainbow palettes (and James’ identical mini version of course), there's not much to report. And, despite a new colourful palette on offer, there still isn’t. The Saweetie collaboration seems like another palette of random colours that Morphe likes to release (though I spy that gorgeous star-shaped pressed glitter). Festival inspired (not that we’ll be having many of those for the next while) it’s Morphe’s first collaboration with a musician instead of a makeup artist. It’s €33/$29/£29, which isn’t too expensive for a palette of this size. I just think that if Morphe put time and effort into the actual colour story of their products and less into the people they collaborate with, they might be a bit more interesting. I plan on trying their brushes, but I’m still not interested in this palette, and I’d never use it. Pass!

Tarte waterproof body makeup

This sounds like fake tan stains, only worse. Tarte, what the hell is this?! Apparently inspired by cult favourite Shape Tape concealer, the waterproof body makeup is a matte, full coverage ‘body perfector’ that’s supposed to cover and conceal veins, blemishes, bruises, scars, freckles and more. It says that it has ‘skin-nourishing maracuja and anti-oxidants that guarantee smoother, brighter and firmer looking skin’, even after washing it off. It costs €39/£33/$39 for 125ml on the Tarte website and it’s available in only eight shades. The options range from very fair to pretty dark, but those definitely won’t cover everyone. I’m not going to shade anyone who might want to use this for whatever reason, but I definitely don’t need it. If it’s ever warm enough in Ireland for me to be showing off my pale, pale skin all I’ll apply on it is factor 50 suncream!

Too Faced Papaya eyeshadow palette

Oh my god, when is Too Faced going to be done with the fruit and food-themed products?

Don’t get me wrong; the Chocolate Bar palette was my very first big beauty purchase and I still love it, but when it was released it was such an innovative and clever concept that it was an important piece to get. Now, I feel that Too Faced have saturated their own market with all of these tacky themed collections. I’ve said it a few times, and I stand by it; packaging is part of the fun of makeup. I’m mildly interested in the Papaya colour theme, I’m looking into pink palettes at the moment, but I don’t want an ugly palette sitting amongst my pretty ones! Too Faced are great for creative concepts and packaging, it’s just wasted on these childish ones.

What do you think? Do you think that I’m completely wrong and you’re actually eyeing some of these products? Thanks so much for reading my blog post, it really means a lot, and I really hope I helped give you some escape from the current reality.
