buy or bye? May 2020 releases

It’s the beginning of the month again, and that calls for a new 'Buy or Bye?'. I really look forward to this every month; sitting down, looking at all of the new products being released and evaluating why I don’t need them in my makeup collection, or what I really like and I’m putting aside for when this pandemic all blows over.
ColourPop Solstice palettes
Would it be a ‘Buy or Bye?’ if I didn’t mention ColourPop? Supposedly the Solstice collection is only available in ULTA in the US, but a quick peek on the website tells me that it’s available online (ok fine, I went to update my wishlist and cart). She’s Got Solstice is a neutral-pink themed palette, while the All Things palette is purple and both cost $14.
Both of the palettes have a mix of metallic and matte shades, and while there aren't any pressed glitters in either, they offer plenty of options and finishes to play with. If it’s still available on the website when ColourPop’s distribution and fulfillment centres have opened up again (and when I figure out what address I’ll be at to pay that damn customs tax), then I’d be very interested to add the All Things palette to the rest of the purple-themed ColourPop palettes that I have.
KVD Shade & Light eye quad
Since Kat announced that she parted ways with Kendo and her Kat Von D cosmetics line, I have been so looking forward to seeing what innovative products the rebranded KVD was going to come out with. This new Shade & Light quad, which I’m pretty sure is the first release since Kat stepped down in January, doesn't seem to reflect a whole lot of the thought and consideration I imagined them doing.
Everything about this palette is disappointing; the concept, the packaging and the colour story. I know that KVD has a Shade & Light eyeshadow palette in the same style as their contour palette, but I don’t think they’ve done a quad like this before? The packaging that used to be synonymous with the tattoo artist made the brand what it is today, and it looks like the design team totally disregarded that. Compared to the innovative, distinguishable palettes like Fetish, Saint & Sinner or Alchemy, this could be released by any other brand. It is alternative and edgy, but it absolutely does not have the extra details that Kat personally added to her products.
The colour story isn’t great either- I can’t see how that metallic purple and matte coral can create enough dimension and depth that would make me want to use the palette over and over again (not that I would, coral is not my colour). I’m wholly uninspired and quite disappointed. I’m going to pass on this.
Beauty Bakerie Bakeware eye brush set
I normally hate makeup that’s food-themed (Too Faced, I’m coming for you!), but something about Beauty Bakerie makes me melt a little. I love the concept; how every product has been given that much attention and thought to make it work with the theme, without being too out there and ridiculous. After this pandemic I will 100% be trying some of the products out- Beauty Bakerie is cruelty free and I’ve heard that their Flour Setting Powder is supposed to be revolutionary (if a bit expensive).
That being said, the brush set would be a little bit much in my makeup collection. I have my favourite Blank Canvas Cosmetics eye brushes (I even wrote a review going through each one that I own), and the aesthetic of these brushes just wouldn’t match my own.
Haus Labs Le Riot lip gloss collection
This is the first time that I come across Haus Labs and I’m definitely impressed. I feel like these are the kind of lip glosses that Christine Quinn from Selling Sunset would use (who else is counting down to season two on the 22nd of May?!). I’d be tempted to get one or two of these actually, especially as they’re cruelty free! The packaging is very innovative and colour selection is wildly varied; from easy-to-wear neutrals to more outrageous colours, and I definitely get a KVD vibe from them. I’d rather swatch them myself before buying, but if I got the chance I’d definitely be interested in trying out the formula.
Sigma Cor De Rosa palette
I don't think that I've ever been so interested in a Sigma palette before.
Cor De Rosa is the only palette since March that I've seen and wanted to buy as soon as it came out. Unsurprisingly, I didn't quite make it in time, so I'm going to have to reshuffle my higher-priced makeup priority list and try and slot it in later on in the year.
Call me bold, but I think this could be the 2020 update to the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance palette. I love the shimmers, I love the mattes, and I get so many ideas when I look at the Cor De Rosa colour story. The shadow selection is perfect for spring and summer- I'm sure that we're going to see a lot of influencers pulling this out at every opportunity.
The only critique I have for this palette is the lack of darker shades. I personally enjoy a darker look even during the daytime, but especially if I'm going out in the evenings (not that I am at the moment, but hopefully in the future). It's not a huge issue- I can always trust my Inglot freedom palette for additional dark browns and blacks, but it would have been nice to be able to create a multi-dimensional look from the one palette.
NYX Filler Instinct lipsticks
I'm loving the look of these new Filler Instinct lipsticks from NYX and I'll definitely be picking up at least one to try out. These semi-sheer lipsticks are infused with hyaluronic acid, which is great for dry skin because it's supposed to draw moisture from your environment into your lips- obviously a god-send during the summer months.
I can't find them on the Boots website, so hopefully by the time we're out of lockdown they'll be available in-store- I very rarely buy any lip products without swatching them, and the shades available could look weird on me very easily!
Real Techniques Cashmere Dreams brushes
The second brush set this month, and this time I actually like these! I never understood why Real Techniques released their original brush collections in the tackiest colours. Obviously I have several pink and orange ones (bright metallic orange? Where did they get that idea from?), and while they do a decent job of blending my makeup, they completley ruin the look of my dressing table. I constantly want to just put them all out of sight in a drawer somewhere so that I don't have to look at them. So obviously, I'm quite in love with these pretty pink ones, and fairly irritated that I bought into the hype of the original ones.
I'm already madly in love with my Blank Canvas Cosmetics brushes, but in all honesty I could very well end up picking up one or two of these just to try them out. I'm in need of a good fluffy blending brush, and if that angled brush is thin enough it would be a great replacement for the cheap Lottie London one I picked up several years ago now.
I'm still being very careful with my makeup budget (read: I'm not planning on spending money so I don't really have one) but it's still fun to escape and look at new releases, it's just a pity that there are so many interesting things I'd like to try! Is there anything that you might pick up this month? What does your beauty budget look like these days?
