Last month I wrote a review on the gorgeous LA Splash Golden Gatsby eyeshadow palette that I bought on an impulse (apparently I'm a sucker for art deco, who knew?). It's not that I have a problem, but I may have placed a separate order for the highlighter palette and one of the lipglosses. I'm going to use the 'I'm a makeup collector' excuse for that one.... I really appreciate the theme and it interests me as a designer, so I went back for a quick glance at the rest of the collection. On top of the highlighter palette and the lipglosses, LA Splash also have eyelashes, eyeliner, lipsticks and mascara in the collection. Considering that The Great Gatsby was based in the roaring 1920s I'm surprised that there isn't at least a singe blush in the collection. I don't even wear blush, it's just something that I was expecting. Anyway, less than a week after placing my order, my little box arrived and I had the last two pieces of the collection in my hands.

The packaging of the Golden Gatsby palette alone would have done a good enough job convincing me to get a few more bits from the collection, but the quality of the eyeshadows definitely pushed me to try more. Financially on a whole, it wasn't a ridiculously expensive expenditure either. LA Splash is available in Europe through Beauty Bay, so the highlighter palette cost €25 and the gloss €14. Because the order cost over €25 I didn't have to pay for shipping, which was a nice little bonus. I also have the Honey browser app and saved a further €3.90 on my second haul so all in all my guilt levels aren't as high as you'd think.
the Old Money highlighter palette
I really love the Old Money highlighter palette for so many reasons. It looks gorgeous beside my eyeshadow palette and the highlighters are great quality.

packaging
The Old Money palette has the same art deco style that matches the Golden Gatsby palette. While the eyeshadow palette is made out of cardboard, LA Splash decided to use plastic for the highlighters. I think that it's pretty disappointing for the most part, I'd have rather that they stick with one or the other- preferably the more matte cardboard material. I do love the plastic though, it feels particularly secure. It's a clip-to-close, which might damage your nail polish if you're not too careful, so you know that there's no way that it'll open unexpectedly. As is common for a highlighter palette there isn't a mirror on the inside. There is, however, the design of a flapper in rose gold, which is a lovely little detail that I really appreciate.
shade selection

There are four different highlighters in the palette. Mazuma has a particular pop, but the other three shades definitely don't just blend into your foundation.

Dough: this highlighter looks champagne in the pan, but it comes out a bit more gold than I was expecting.
Mazuma: a gorgeous gold. I don't have a single highlighter this shade, and it's something that I'll have to experiment with a bit more. I'm not really into a gold highlight, and I think it might be more suitable for those with a darker skin tone.

Sugar: my favourite highlight of the group, Sugar is a delicate pink.
Scratch: a peachy highlighter that looks pinker in the pan.

pigmentation, formula & blend
The Old Money highlighter palette is much better in terms of formula compared to the Golden Gatsby eyeshadow palette. All four swatch opaque and pigmented, with Mazuma jumping off your arm. They all apply easily with a cheek or fan brush (here are my favourite brushes) and are easy to layer up. They're so soft and comfortable to apply that there's no uncomfortable pulling or scratching to get them onto your face, and they're easy to blend out if you want a more subtle look.
the Golden Gatsby Glam Gloss
I only picked up one of the glosses to try out from the LA Splash Golden Gatsby collection, and I'm so glad that I did. Only buy one, that is.

I don't think I've ever come across such an awful gloss formula that wasn't in a childrens' set. Ugh. I got Cupid's Bow, a rosey pink that I hoped would be flattering on me. Spoiler: it's not. It's closer to a bricky-pink than a rose, that has a strong, but not altogether awful, vanilla scent.
I got sucked into the packaging, of course, and it's for that alone that I'll have it loitering in my lipgloss pot and not in the bin. I won't ever open it, either; the lipgloss itself is so thick that when I close it it squirts out over the edges, making a mess. Applied to the lip is even worse; it's gloopy and thick and sits uncomfortably on your lip. I don't like how it looks and it's not enjoyable to wear at all.

I've been so impressed by the LA Splash Golden Gatsby collection, in terms of theme, packaging and quality (aside from the gloss, obviously). Have you anything from the Golden Gatsby collection? I'll definitely be keeping an eye on the brand in future, it's not expensive at all and it's enjoyable to play with. Thanks so much for reading!
