The beauty industry never sleeps. Between the wave of YouTube makeup hauls and tutorials uploaded every day, the countless of photos from beauty gurus promoting products on Instagram, and beauty brands themselves constantly coming out with the latest and greatest, it can be pretty hard to keep on top of it all. I almost miss the days when I was a casual makeup lover. But I'm not, and it's important to cut through the confusion and noise and think critically about our beauty purchases, so here's my first 'buy or bye?' to highlight what I have my eye on, and what I don't.
Jeffree Star Cosmetics Blood Lust palette
Well, I've already written a dedicated blog post on Jeffree's latest purple palette (and you can find it here). To sum it up; I'm so uninspired by it. I totally agree with everyone that says that it's disappointing for a purple colour theory. Sure, I like the teal and the gold, but too many of the shades in Blood Lust are too similar, there aren't enough dark shadows (and I'm not talking about the royal purple that's just screaming to be included) and the colour story just doesn't do anything for me. I was always a skeptical Jeffree fan, but after the whole Tati/James Charles drama I just don't have time for it, and for him. I do like the look of his new Extreme Frost highlighter, but it's $50 which is an absolute joke. Cheers, but no to all of it.
Catrice Minnie & Daisy collection
I love it, I love it, I love it! I haven't been this excited about a Catrice collection in a long time (mostly because I shipped off to the UK for over two years and they don't have Catrice??!) and I'm so ready for this one! If you like Minnie and Daisy, you'll be over the moon with the two nine-pan palettes, the six nail polishes and brush collection. At €9 per palette, €2 per polish and €10 for the brush set, they're a steal. I'm intrigued about the Daisy palette and a couple of the polishes, so if I run into them I'll be sure to pick them up and write a review. I haven't tried the Catrice nail polish formula yet, have you? I'm not sure what to expect.
Too Faced Primed & Poreless Face Powder and Face Primer
Too Faced is one of those brands that I want to love, but I never end up inspired or excited by. This primer and powder release is no different. When it comes to primer I almost never see any results or improvement (I'm testing one right now and I literally see no difference- but maybe that's because my Revlon foundation is that good), and I've been using my Rimmel Stay Matte powder since I was 18. I recently found out that Rimmel isn't cruelty free, so I'll have to find a new powder when what I have runs out, but it sure as hell won't be Too Faced! I'll pass.
Sleek Sunset Vibes collection
Another hard pass for me. As much as I like Sleek cosmetics, this one is just not for me. The collection consists of an eyeshadow palette, highlight palette and a liquid highlighter. At first I thought it was the lighting, but the colour story in this collection is very yellow and orangey. Considering it's the 'sunset' collection, I'll assume it's not the lighting. When I look at the shadows I don't know what to do with them. Pink, yellow, peach and orange just aren't the kind of colours that I like to use, so it doesn't make any sense for me. Same with the highlighter palette and liquid highlighter- I'm far more comfortable with cool toned shades!
Milani Ludicrous Lights collection
Oooooooooh, these are so pretty! I've never seen Milani in stores, but I've just discovered that it's available on Beauty Bay so I will 100% be picking up some of these when they drop on the website [edit: scrap that, I just found out that Milani is available in Boots!]. The collection includes a duochrome highlighter (my favourite), an eye topper and a lipgloss, and they're available in peach, blue and pink. I'm actually interested in all of these (except peach and blue lipgloss- I don't think I'm cool enough), so I don't know yet what I'll pick up. It'll be a surprise I guess. But I'm looking forward to trying out Milani as a brand!
Huda mini pastels
Huda is one of the brands that I really want to try in 2020. I hear so many good things and there are a few things that have caught my eye- but not these new pastel palettes. I just get major ColourPop vibes by these. I just feel like the themed ColourPop nine-pan palettes would be of better quality and better colour story, you know? Though, I do fancy the lilac palette a little bit. I'm not sold on the $29 (€26.64/£22.46) price tag. I don't know about this one, I'll have to see.
ColourPop Sailor Moon collection
It's not a secret that I love ColourPop. They're a 2020 discovery and I already have Flutter By (review coming!), Good As Gold and Double Entendre, and a few other little bits. I'm going to skip on Sailor Moon though. I'm not a fan as it is, and while I like the colour story I can easily recreate it with my other ColourPop palettes. I love the idea of the lip bundles, but they're not my colours at all. ColourPop messed up a bit with these, I feel like the shade options are way too minimal- the two bundles are basically the same. The blushes are cute if you collect them. I do like the glitters, they look so cool! I might pick them up the next time I place an order.
Lime Crime Fairy Garden collection
Since I found out that problematic Lime Crime creator Doe Deere is out of the picture I've finally been able to support the brand. Last week the Fairy Garden collection was released and I'm impressed! Now, before you think I'm going to go crazy or something- I'm not. These are some very bright colours, and I'm completely unqualified to be messing with them. The collection includes everything you might need if you fancy becoming a fairy. The Lid-Lite eyeshadows ($16 each) come in six shades; champagne, pink, lavender, gold, blue, and another lavender. If you want to glow like a fairy Body Lite creamy body highlights are $25 each, and if you want your hair to match the Unicorn Hair dye comes in violet purple and electric blue for $16. There aren't any crazy bright lipsticks in the collection, which is disappointing, but Lime Crime has released two Wet Cherry glosses at $18 each; Fairy Cherry and Mint Cherry. Finally, in case your hair isn't eccentric enough, there are two hair glitter mists for $16. You never know, I might suddenly lose my mind and decide to try these if they wash out easily. It's doubtful though!
Ok guys, these were only a tiny selection of what's been released or teased in the beauty community lately- by the time I post this tomorrow there will no doubt be more. Is there anything that you've seen lately that you want to try, or is there anything that screams at you to keep well away from?
