I love butterflies. They're the cutest things and I have a habit of collecting them. I'm surprised that I don't have a butterfly tattoo (yet). So when I saw that ColourPop have a butterfly themed palette, and it was in stock, I quickly ordered it and started my justifications. That being said, it cost only $18 (€16.62 or £13.80 at the moment of writing) for 12 ColourPop-quality shadows, which isn't so bad, especially as it's not a color story that I already have. After a good month of playing around with different looks, I can finally say that I am qualified enough to give you a proper review. Read on!

packaging

ColourPop have the same kind of formula when it comes to their packaging. Like the Good As Gold palette (reviewed here) and Double Entendre palette (which I reviewed here), the Flutter By palette is a standard 12 pan ColourPop palette, made of cardboard and without a mirror. The cute, almost Tinkerbell-esque shade names are printed beside the corresponding pans, and again at the back of the palette. I do think that ColourPop made an extra effort in terms of presentation for this palette. On top of the adorable butterfly packaging, they added iridescent glitter, gold foil and embossed little details on both the outside and inside covers. For the packaging alone, Flutter By is a gorgeous addition to my collection and it's enjoyable to take out and use.

shade selection

Flutter By is a purple, cool-toned palette that allows for plenty of looks thanks to an impressive range of mattes, metallics and glitters. I did find the sheer amount of choice to be a bi daunting at first, especially when I had to choose between the three gorgeous metallics for my main lid color. For those who like a good number of mattes in their eyeshadow palettes, you'll be delighted, with plenty of transition shades, and darker ones to deepen your crease.

top row

Just Imagine: an absolutely gorgeous pink metallic

Wild Wing: one of the two matte transition shades, this one is a little purpley-grey on the skin

Made To Last: the second transition shade, this one is a pretty caramel matte.

Gotta Fly: this red shade feels like a metallic texture, but swatches sheer and glittery. It's an interesting shade to play with.

middle row

Sunflare: one of my favourite shades, this iridescent pinkky/purple shadow is just gorgeous all over the lid.

Overpacked: the only purple glitter in the palette. ColourPop seem to love adding them, despite how controversial they are. I have risked putting it on my lid. I found that even applying with a finger, the glitter sort of bunches together and doesn't really apply smoothly across the lid. I applied it over other shadows, so I didn't use glitter glue, and I found that while the pressed glitter did self-adhere to my lid, it did spend the rest of the day falling off. Take that knowledge and do with it what you will.

Mariposa: a mauve matte with champagne glitter, it's one of my favourite shades.

Angel Bb: My sister's favourite, this deep burgundy is ideal for deepening your crease.

bottom row

Lush: a pink ivory matte that I often use as a base color for my lid.

Ch-ch-changes: a medium brown shade, I sometimes use to deepen my crease or as a transition shade.

Getaway: the last foil shadow, this one is a lot more brassy on the lid than it looks in the pan.

Float On: a dark brown with flecks of glitter, I love using this shadow to deepen the outer corners of my eye.

pigmentation, formula & blend

If you get the Flutter By palette, you get a typical ColourPop palette. By that, I mean that for a reasonable price, the formula of every shadow is spot-on. The foils are the softest, smoothest shades that you'll ever smear onto your lids. The mattes are buttery. That pressed glitter looks gritty, but in reality it's soft and enjoyable to apply. ColourPop formulas are a real experience.

The only real criticism that I would mention, if you even want to call it that, is how the darker mattes can sometimes give fallout and be harder to blend. Those are easily excusable though, and just require a little more patience to get the shadows to do what you want them to do.

In essence, I really love this palette, and if you want to try something from ColourPop I would absolutely recommend this one. There is huge variety in the shadows, which give so many options for makeup looks, you could easily change your eye look on the daily with this! And as always, even without primer my eyeshadow stays put all day long and doesn't ever crease. What do you think? Do you like the color story of the Flutter By palette?
